Eid ul Fitr 2027 is expected on Wednesday 10 March 2027 in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, and on Tuesday 9 March 2027 in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, the UK and North America. It marks 1 Shawwal 1448, the day after Ramadan ends. The exact day depends on the moon sighting on chaand raat, so it can move by one day.

When is Eid ul Fitr 2027 in each country?

Eid falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month after Ramadan. Because Ramadan itself starts a day later in South Asia, Eid usually does too.

Country Expected Eid ul Fitr 2027 Chaand raat (night before)
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman Tuesday 9 March Monday 8 March
UK, USA, Canada (most mosques) Tuesday 9 March Monday 8 March
Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia Tuesday 9 March Monday 8 March
Pakistan Wednesday 10 March Tuesday 9 March
India, Bangladesh Wednesday 10 March Tuesday 9 March

Why can the Eid date move by a day?

A month in the Islamic calendar is either 29 or 30 days long. On the evening of the 29th of Ramadan, people look for the new crescent:

  • If the moon is seen, Ramadan ends with 29 fasts and Eid is the next day.
  • If it is not seen, Ramadan completes 30 fasts and Eid is the day after that.

In Pakistan, Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 9 February 2027. The 29th fast then falls on Tuesday 9 March. If the crescent is sighted that evening, Eid is on Wednesday 10 March. If not, Eid moves to Thursday 11 March. You can follow both months on our Hijri calendar for 1448, which shows every day with its Gregorian date.

What happens on chaand raat?

Chaand raat means "night of the moon". In Pakistan the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee meets in the evening, collects sighting reports from zonal committees and announces its decision on television, usually between 8 PM and 11 PM. In the Gulf the announcement often comes earlier, after the Saudi Supreme Court reviews witness reports.

Chaand raat is also one of the busiest shopping nights of the year in Pakistan and India. Markets stay open late for mehndi, bangles, sweets and last-minute clothes, and many families exchange Eidi plans for the next day.

What should you do before Eid prayer?

The Sunnah of Eid ul Fitr is simple and family-friendly. Common practices include:

  1. Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr (fitrana) before the Eid prayer, so those in need can celebrate too. Pakistani scholars announce the minimum amount each Ramadan.
  2. Have a bath and wear your best clothes, new if you have them.
  3. Eat something sweet before leaving, traditionally an odd number of dates.
  4. Recite the takbeer on the way: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah.
  5. Go to the prayer one way and return another, greeting people as you go.

Eid prayer is usually held 15 to 45 minutes after sunrise. In Lahore, sunrise on 10 March 2027 is around 6:20 AM, so most congregations start between 7:00 and 8:30 AM. Check the time announced by your local mosque or Eidgah.

How many days are left until Eid ul Fitr 2027?

From mid-October 2026 there are roughly five months to go. Ramadan 2027 starts first, around 8 or 9 February, and Eid follows about 29 or 30 days later. You can check today's exact number on the Ramadan countdown and the Eid countdown above.

How is Eid ul Fitr different from Eid al-Adha?

Muslims celebrate two Eids each year, and people often mix up their dates:

  • Eid ul Fitr ("the festival of breaking the fast") comes on 1 Shawwal, straight after Ramadan. Its special charity is fitrana, paid before the prayer.
  • Eid al-Adha ("the festival of sacrifice") comes on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, during Hajj, about 70 days later. Families who can afford it offer a qurbani animal.

In 2027, Eid al-Adha is expected on Sunday 16 May in Saudi Arabia and Monday 17 May in Pakistan. Our Eid al-Adha countdown tracks it. Both Eids start with a congregational prayer after sunrise and a sermon, and both are days for visiting family, wearing new clothes and sharing food with neighbours and people in need.

Is Eid a public holiday?

In Pakistan, Eid ul Fitr is a gazetted public holiday. The federal government announces the exact days, normally three or four, a few weeks before Ramadan ends. Gulf countries announce their own Eid breaks, which are often longer. In the UK, USA and Canada, Eid is not a national holiday, so many people book leave in advance. That is a good reason to plan for both possible dates.

Where do these dates come from?

DaysNest uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, and adjusts it by one day for Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, where months usually begin a day later. You can read more about how the calendar is calculated in this overview of the Umm al-Qura calendar.

Our Islamic date today page shows the current Hijri date for 16 countries, so you can watch Ramadan and Shawwal approach day by day.
