Hijri to Gregorian: How to Convert Any Islamic Date (With Examples)

Converting a Hijri date to Gregorian takes seconds with a converter, and you can estimate the year by hand with a simple formula. Here are both methods, worked examples, and why results can differ by a day.

Gold crescent moon and calendar squares on a green background with the words: Hijri to Gregorian, convert any Islamic date

To convert a Hijri to Gregorian date, enter the Islamic day, month and year into a converter that uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, such as the DaysNest Hijri converter. It returns the Gregorian date and weekday instantly. For a quick estimate of the year alone, multiply the Hijri year by 0.970224 and add 621.5774.

How do you convert Hijri to Gregorian step by step?

  1. Open the Hijri converter on DaysNest.
  2. Choose the Hijri to Gregorian direction at the top.
  3. Pick the Hijri day, month and year from the lists.
  4. Tick the local moon sighting box if you live in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.
  5. Read the Gregorian date and weekday shown under the form.

That is all. If you choose a 30th day in a month that has only 29 days, the converter tells you and shows the last day of the month instead. To go the other way, switch to Gregorian to Hijri and pick a date from the calendar.

What are some worked examples?

Here are a few dates converted with the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia. In Pakistan each one usually falls a day later.

Hijri date Gregorian date (Umm al-Qura) What it is
1 Muharram 1448 Tuesday 16 June 2026 Islamic New Year
10 Muharram 1448 Thursday 25 June 2026 Ashura
12 Rabi al-Awwal 1448 Tuesday 25 August 2026 Mawlid an-Nabi
1 Ramadan 1448 Monday 8 February 2027 First fast of Ramadan
1 Shawwal 1448 Tuesday 9 March 2027 Eid ul Fitr
1 Muharram 1420 Saturday 17 April 1999 A date from the past

You can see every day of any month from 1447 to 1449 AH on our Hijri calendar pages, with the Gregorian date under each Hijri day.

Can you convert Hijri to Gregorian by hand?

You can estimate the year with simple arithmetic. The Islamic year is about 354.37 days and the Gregorian year about 365.24 days. The calendars also started in different years: the Hijri calendar begins in 622 CE, the year of the Prophet's migration to Madinah. That gives these formulas:

  • Hijri to Gregorian year: G ≈ H × 0.970224 + 621.5774
  • Gregorian to Hijri year: H ≈ (G − 621.5774) ÷ 0.970224

Example: for 1448 AH, 1448 × 0.970224 = 1404.88, plus 621.58 = 2026.46. The decimal part tells you roughly how far into the Gregorian year the Hijri year begins: 0.46 means about mid-year. Indeed, 1 Muharram 1448 is 16 June 2026.

Another example: for 1420 AH you get 1999.30, so the year starts around April 1999. The real date is 17 April 1999.

The formula is good for checking roughly which year something happened, for example in an old document. For the exact day, use the converter, because month lengths vary between 29 and 30 days.

Why do two converters give different answers?

There are three common reasons:

  • Calendar system. Most modern converters, including ours, use Umm al-Qura. Some older tools use the "tabular" or arithmetic Islamic calendar, which can differ by one or two days.
  • Local moon sighting. In Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, months usually start a day after Saudi Arabia. Our converter has a tick box for this; see our Islamic date today in Pakistan page for the live difference.
  • Time of day. An Islamic day begins at sunset. An event on the evening of 8 February 2027 already belongs to 1 Ramadan in the Islamic calendar, even though the Gregorian date is still the 8th.

What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?

The Umm al-Qura calendar is the official Islamic calendar of Saudi Arabia, named after the Umm al-Qura University in Makkah. It is calculated in advance using the time of the new moon and sunset in Makkah, which makes it predictable for years ahead. You can read how it works in the Islamic calendar article on Wikipedia. It is also built into modern computers and phones, which is how our converter works without an internet lookup.

When do you need to convert dates on documents?

Hijri dates still appear on many official papers, especially for people who live or have worked in the Gulf. Common cases include:

  • Saudi residence and work papers, where older iqamas, visas and contracts show Hijri dates, sometimes alongside Gregorian ones.
  • Old family records, such as nikah certificates or letters from grandparents, that note dates in the Islamic calendar.
  • Religious and school calendars in Pakistan, which list holidays by Hijri date before the government announces the Gregorian day.
  • Birth dates for Hajj or Umrah forms, where an agent may ask you to confirm a Hijri date.

For anything legal, such as a visa expiry, always check the date printed on the document or ask the issuing office, since a one-day difference can matter. A converter is perfect for planning, but the official record is what counts.

How do you find your Hijri birthday?

Switch the converter to Gregorian to Hijri and enter your date of birth. For example, someone born on 1 January 2000 was born on 24 Ramadan 1420 AH. Because the Hijri year is shorter, your Hijri birthday moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year, and your age in Hijri years is slightly higher. Our age calculator shows your age in both calendars.

Key takeaways

  • For an exact Hijri to Gregorian date, use a converter based on the Umm al-Qura calendar.
  • For a rough year, use G ≈ H × 0.970224 + 621.5774.
  • In Pakistan, India and Bangladesh, expect dates to be one day later than Saudi Arabia.
  • Remember that an Islamic day starts at sunset, not midnight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Hijri date to a Gregorian date?

Open the DaysNest Hijri converter, choose Hijri to Gregorian, then pick the day, month and year. The Gregorian date and weekday appear instantly. Tick the local moon-sighting box if you are in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh.

Is there a formula to convert Hijri years to Gregorian years?

Yes, for an estimate: Gregorian year ≈ Hijri year × 0.970224 + 621.5774. For 1448 AH this gives 2026.46, meaning the year starts in mid-2026. The formula gives the year only, not the exact day.

Why does my Hijri to Gregorian result differ by one day?

Different countries start months on different days. Saudi Arabia uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar, while Pakistan, India and Bangladesh usually begin months a day later after local moon sighting. Both results can be correct for their country.

How do I find my Hijri birthday?

Enter your Gregorian date of birth in the converter's Gregorian to Hijri mode to see your Hijri birth date. For example, 1 January 2000 was 24 Ramadan 1420 AH in the Umm al-Qura calendar.

Islamic dates on DaysNest follow the Umm al-Qura calendar. Local moon sighting can move them by a day, so confirm with your local mosque or moon-sighting committee.
